Atlantic Canada

6 Days
niagra falls

Overview

The Atlantic Canada Explorer runs six days and both starts and finishes in Halifax. In between it takes in two more Canadian stops, so you see how the region fits together rather than one city in detail. Hotels, meals, transport between towns and an expert guide are all part of the price, and the route is worked out end to end before you arrive. That leaves you free to pay attention to the coastline, the food and the people you meet. Six days is enough time for the Maritimes to make sense.

Itinerary

Halifax is both the start and the finish. Over six days the route adds two more Canadian stops, and accommodation, an expert guide, meals and transport are covered throughout. Here is how the days fall.

Day 1

Arriving in Halifax

Halifax sits on a deep natural harbour, and its waterfront boardwalk runs for kilometres past heritage buildings and moored boats. The trip opens with a walking tour along that harbour. In the evening the group sits down to a meal together, and yes, there is lobster if you want it. Afterwards the pubs are a short walk away. Nova Scotia takes its beer seriously, and it shows.

Day 2

Halifax to Moncton

A slow morning: time for a last wander around Halifax before the drive to Moncton. That leaves a day and a half in New Brunswick. Moncton has brew pubs and plenty to do outdoors, and it sits at the top of the Bay of Fundy, where the tides rise and fall further than anywhere else on earth. The lobster is good here too.

Day 3

Moncton

A full day in Moncton. It starts at Magnetic Hill Winery, where you can taste the wine and see how it is made. After that there is an optional paddle on the Bay of Fundy, which is a strange place to kayak: the water you set out on can drop metres while you are on it. Nordic spas and pubs fill the gaps. Dinner is lobster again, if you have not had your fill.

Day 4

Moncton to Charlottetown

Out of Moncton and across to Charlottetown, the small island capital of Prince Edward Island. It is a walkable place of red-brick streets and painted wooden houses. On the stroll through town you pass Province House, where the 1864 conference that set Canadian Confederation in motion was held.

Day 5

Charlottetown to Halifax

Back to Halifax for the last night in Nova Scotia. The stop here is Alexander Keith's, a brewery that has been running in the city since 1820, where the tour covers how it has kept going that long. The rest of the evening is yours.

Day 6

Halifax

The trip ends at check-out. Swap contact details with the people you have spent the week with, then head for the airport or stay on in Halifax a while longer.
